More patients die awaiting solid-organ transplantation thancurrently receive viable organs. Perhaps a victim of its ownsuccess, transplantation is the treatment of choice for failedorgan function. Despite the burgeoning demand for transplantedorgans, the number of available cadaveric organs has remainedessentially static over the past decade.
