The ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome is an iatrogenic complicationof ovulation-induction therapy. In its most severe form, thissyndrome involves massive ovarian enlargement and the formationof multiple ovarian cysts, fluid shifts resulting in extravascularfluid accumulation and intravascular volume depletion, renalfailure, hypovolemic shock, and in some cases, death. The severeform is rare, with a reported incidence of 0.5 to 5 percentamong patients undergoing ovulation-induction therapy.
