To the Editor: Ischemic mitral regurgitation is defined as mitral insufficiency that occurs as a result of coronary artery disease in the absence of intrinsic structural abnormalities of the mitral valve. Ischemic mitral regurgitation develops in approximately 19 percent of patients with myocardial infarction1 and tends to be associated with an increase in the severity of coronary artery disease and an increased mortality.
