To the Editor: Aristotle proclaimed more than 2300 years ago that "nature abhors a vacuum." This dictum seems to be confirmed by the study by Kyaw et al. (April 6 issue)1 showing that the rate of antibiotic-resistant invasive pneumococcal infections decreased in young children and older persons after the introduction of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine, at the expense of an increase in infections caused by serotypes not included in the vaccine (so-called replacement types). In addition, other studies have shown a negative association of the nasopharyngeal carriage of vaccine-type Streptococcus pneumoniae with the nasal carriage of Staphylococcus aureus in unvaccinated . . .
