Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI), when performedby an experienced team in a timely fashion, is a better reperfusiontherapy than in-hospital thrombolysis in patients who have acutemyocardial infarction with ST-segment elevation.1,2 Althoughrandomized trials of primary balloon angioplasty and primarystenting have not demonstrated a mortality benefit of primarystenting and have shown conflicting results with regard to therisk of reinfarction,3,4 primary stenting of the infarct-relatedlesion has become standard treatment in most patients undergoingprimary PCI.
Drug-eluting stents significantly reduce the risks of both restenosisand target-vessel revascularization after elective PCI, as comparedwith uncoated stents.5,6. . . [Full Text of this Article]
