To the Editor: The inverse relationship between the frequency of condom use and the incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV) infection, reported by Winer et al. (June 22 issue),1 may be due to variation in the prevalence of HPV infection among sex partners with different levels of condom use. Men who use condoms more frequently may be more aware of the possibility of sexually transmitted infections and may be less likely to have sexual contact with high-risk groups, such as sex workers.
