This issue of the Journal contains two provocative contributions to the literature on heart failure. Owan et al.¹ describe the epidemiologic outcomes and survival rates among patients with heart failure who were admitted to the Mayo Clinic Hospitals for the disease from 1987 through 2001, extending results published in 1998²; Bhatia et al.³ review the shorter-term outcomes among patients hospitalized for heart failure in the province of Ontario over a two-year period, beginning in April 1999.
