We spend about a third of our lives sleeping, yet we do not know the reason for this. Why is staying inactive and unconscious of the environment for many hours each day critical for our survival and for our physiological and mental health? What happens to our bodies and our brains when we are asleep? Why do the "movies" of our dreams mix real-life experiences and fantasies far more elaborate than those we create while awake?
