Worldwide, when the needs of injured or ill patients exceed what local clinics and hospitals can provide, urgent evacuation by air to the nearest well-equipped medical facility becomes the key to preserving function and saving lives. The international aeromedical evacuation industry is expanding, in part because of two recent trends: increasing travel to regions where road trauma and infectious diseases are endemic but dependable medical care is unavailable and an increasing number of travelers who are predisposed to injury or illness by advancing age or underlying medical conditions.1,2,3,4,5,6,7
