Clinical practice guidelines are systematically developed statementsthat aim to help physicians and patients reach the best healthcare decisions. Good guidelines have many attributes, includingvalidity, reliability, reproducibility, clinical applicabilityand flexibility, clarity, development through a multidisciplinaryprocess, scheduled reviews, and documentation.1 More than 2000guidelines are currently represented in the National GuidelineClearinghouse (www.guideline.gov). Medical specialty societiesare their most common sponsors.
