Two quite different influenza vaccines are now licensed for use in the United States — a trivalent inactivated influenza vaccine that is administered intramuscularly and a live attenuated influenza vaccine that is administered by means of a nasal spray. The trivalent inactivated vaccine was first licensed for use in military populations during the 1940s.
