To the Editor: Lehman et al. (March 29 issue)1 report on their evaluation of the role of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in improving detection of contralateral breast cancer after a diagnosis of unilateral breast cancer. In their study of 135 patients with positive findings on MRI, 30 had carcinomas, of which only 18 were invasive carcinomas. The rest of the lesions were ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), a heterogeneous group of lesions with variable malignant potential. Not all DCIS lesions will progress to invasive malignant disease.
