The first edition of Goodwin and Jamison's book on manic depressive illness, published in 1990, became a classic, and clinicians, researchers, and patients alike frequently referred to it as the bible of bipolar disorders. Producing the much-anticipated second edition of this masterpiece must have been a daunting task, but the editors recruited 15 experts in the field to help collate findings of research since the publication of the first edition, to develop an updated and improved version of their book.
