During the flood after Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, healthcare providers in marooned New Orleans hospitals worked in almostunimaginably difficult conditions while awaiting rescue. Nowherewas the situation more desperate than at Memorial Medical Center,where for 4 days a small staff struggled to care for criticallyill patients in a dark building with no electric power, no freshwater, a flooded first floor, a nonfunctional sanitation system,and an interior temperature above 100°F.
