To the Editor: Many isolates of community-acquired methicillin-resistantStaphylococcus aureus (MRSA) produce Panton–Valentineleukocidin (PVL), increasing the virulence of the bacteria,which can cause disseminated deep abscesses and necrotizingpneumonia.1 We report the transmission of PVL-positive MRSAbetween a symptomatic woman and both her asymptomatic familyand their healthy pet cat.
An otherwise healthy woman presented with recurrent multipledeep abscesses. Swabs from several abscesses and nasal culturesgrew MRSA that was resistant to both beta-lactam and fusidicacid antibiotics. Polymerase-chain-reaction assays for the PVLgenes lukS-PV and lukF-PV were positive. The genotype of thestaphylococcal chromosomal cassette was SCC. . . [Full Text of this Article]
