Heeding reports from an array of interests that a shortage of physicians looms nationally and already exists in some locales and in many specialties, allopathic and osteopathic schools of medicine have begun to increase the size of their first-year classes, and new schools are being developed to educate more students. As an early result, the total number of students entering U.S. medical and osteopathic schools last September was the largest in their history.
