Thyroid hormones are essential for normal brain development, growth, and metabolism. Their synthesis is dependent on a normally developed thyroid gland, an adequate nutritional intake of iodide, and a series of biochemical steps to organify iodide.¹ Iodide is scarce in most environments. Despite important progress in eradicating iodine deficiency disorders, which lead to the development of endemic goiter and are associated with various degrees of mental retardation, iodine deficiency remains a major public health issue.²
