To the clinician, systemic lupus erythematosus is importantbecause it is a potentially fatal disease that is easily confusedwith many other disorders. To the immunologist, lupus is intriguingbecause all the key components of the immune system are involvedin the underlying mechanisms of the disease. This review describesthese mechanisms and shows how knowledge of the pathogenesisof lupus facilitates its treatment.
