Myocarditis may present with a wide range of symptoms, rangingfrom mild dyspnea or chest pain that resolves without specifictherapy to cardiogenic shock and death. Dilated cardiomyopathywith chronic heart failure is the major long-term sequela ofmyocarditis. Most often, myocarditis results from common viralinfections; less commonly, specific forms of myocarditis mayresult from other pathogens, toxic or hypersensitivity drugreactions, giant-cell myocarditis, or sarcoidosis.
