Triggering of Sudden Death from Cardiac Causes by Vigorous Exertion In this large study of male physicians, bouts of vigorous physical exertion were associated with a transient increase in the risk of sudden death. This risk was attenuated, but not eliminated, if exercise was performed regularly. Despite the transient increase in risk with vigorous exertion, the absolute magnitude of the risk of sudden death during exertion was extremely small.

Human Herpesvirus 8 Infection in Men Who Have Sex with Men Infection with human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) is associated with the development of Kaposišs sarcoma and appears to be sexually transmitted. HHV-8 was detected in mucosal samples from 30 of 50 HHV-8seropositive men who had sex with men. The virus was present in 30 percent of the oropharyngeal samples but in only 1 percent of the anal and genital samples. The titers of HHV-8 were far higher in oropharyngeal samples than in other types of samples.
Human Herpesvirus 8 Infection and Marrow Failure after Transplantation About
four months after receiving a kidney from the same cadaveric donor, who
was seropositive for human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8), one recipient presented
with disseminated Kaposišs sarcoma and the other had an acute syndrome of
fever and marrow failure. Primary HHV-8 infection was documented in both
patients. HHV-8 infection may be associated with not only malignant, but
also nonmalignant, complications in immunosuppressed hosts. |
